Karl Markovics

Karl is an Austrian actor and film director known for his extensive work in both national and international productions. Born in Vienna, he nurtured a passion for the stage from a young age. Although he did not pass the entrance exam for the prestigious Max-Reinhardt-Seminar, he remained undeterred, beginning his career at the Serapionstheater in Vienna and later gaining acclaim with the Wiener Ensemble in the 1980s. His theatrical talents culminated in his 2005 directorial debut with Eugène Ionesco’s THE BALD SINGER at the Theater in der Josefstadt. While theatre has remained his first passion, screen roles brought him widespread recognition, especially as ‘Detective Ernst Stockinger’ in the popular series INSPECTOR REX and its spin-off STOCKINGER. Karl has showcased his range with roles in films such as HINTERHOLZ 8, KOMM, SÜSSER TOD, and his portrayal of far-right terrorist Franz Fuchs in the TV film FRANZ FUCHS - EIN PATRIOT. In 2011, he made his directorial debut with the acclaimed film BREATHING, which premiered at Cannes. He is internationally best known for his role as the Jewish forger ‘Salomon Sorowitsch’ in THE COUNTERFEITERS, Austria’s first film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Other notable performances include ‘Wolf’ in Wes Anderson’s THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, ‘Charles Mangel’ in Jonathan Jakubowicz’s RESISTANCE, and a role in Terrence Malick’s A HIDDEN LIFE. He can currently be seen opposite Kate Winslet in the HBO series THE REGIME, directed and executive produced by Stephen Frears. His latest collaboration with Wes Anderson is in the espionage black comedy THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME.
